Saudi Arabia-based Red Sea Gateway Terminal Group’s local unit, RSGT Bangladesh, launched full operations Tuesday at Patenga Container Terminal after investing $170 million over two years. The company operates the facility under a 22-year concession with Chittagong Port Authority.
Investments include $30 million for four ship-to-shore cranes, $25 million for 14 hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes and $3 million for a container scanner. The company also expanded yards, warehouses and digital systems.
Commercial operations began in June 2024. The terminal later added full import and export services, introduced an electronic portal and received Green Terminal Certification from Bureau Veritas.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, finance minister, said faster vessel turnaround and delivery times are essential to economic growth and Bangladesh’s goal of becoming a South Asian logistics hub.
