Bangladesh aims to conclude trade negotiations with eight to 10 countries by 2027 as it seeks to protect export markets ahead of its graduation from least developed country status, commerce minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said Monday.
Negotiations or preparations are underway with Oman, Singapore, and New Zealand, while securing a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union remains a priority.
Muktadir said Bangladesh has signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements with Japan and South Korea and received preliminary approval to pursue membership in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
The government is also seeking a three-year postponement of its graduation, warning that reduced trade preferences could undermine export competitiveness.
Speaking at a seminar in Dhaka on Oct. 19, Muktadir said he expected a decision on the extension request before the end of October.
