Bangladesh state minister for Liberation War affairs Ishraque Hossain announced his resignation Monday following controversy over his participation in an anti-drug campaign while carrying a firearm.
Hossain said he discussed his resignation with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to avoid embarrassing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and disrupting the government’s work.
Speaking at a news conference at the National Press Club, Hossain defended carrying a licensed firearm, saying it was necessary for his personal safety while coordinating the campaign as a public representative.
“I am disappointed in the role of the media, why was I targeted like this?” Hossain said, accusing news outlets of pushing an agenda.
Hossain, son of former Dhaka Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, said he would continue his anti-drug campaign despite leaving government.
“I have asked the prime minister to relieve me of my duties as a state minister. I have asked for permission to work on eradicating drugs. He has given me the opportunity.”
