Cyberbullying was associated with higher rates of major depressive disorder (MDD) among adolescent girls in Bangladesh, according to research highlighted by The Business Standard on World Mental Health Day, Oct. 10.
The study, published Aug. 12, 2025, analyzed nationally representative data from Bangladesh’s 2019-20 adolescent health and well-being survey. Among 4,984 girls, 8% reported cyberbullying during the previous year, while 12% had MDD.
Among girls reporting cyberbullying, 31% had MDD. The association remained significant after researchers accounted for factors including age, education, employment, and socioeconomic status.
Researchers recommended accessible reporting channels, awareness campaigns in schools and on social media, and timely counseling through teachers and health care providers.
Mental health expert Helal Uddin Ahmed urged victims to seek help promptly and said families should avoid blaming them for online harassment.
