The United States hopes Bangladesh and India can reach an agreement over the fate of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, whose presence in India has become a source of tension between the neighboring countries, a U.S. State Department official said.
“We understand that this has become a major source of hostility between India and Bangladesh,” the official said at a briefing in New York. “So we hope that they will discuss it among themselves and reach a solution.”
Hasina has lived in India since being ousted following the 2024 mass uprising. Washington has not taken a formal position on what should happen to her.
Asked about restrictions on activities of the Awami League, the official declined to comment on Bangladesh’s domestic politics and said the decision on whether to lift the restrictions rests with the Bangladesh government.
