Bangladesh ruling lawmakers vent over rural power cuts, policing, and fertilizer distribution

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmakers raised complaints over rural power cuts, weak policing, and fertilizer distribution at a parliamentary party meeting chaired by prime minister Tarique Rahman.

Lawmakers said villages were facing heavier load-shedding than Dhaka and other major cities, increasing public resentment.

Anindya Islam Amit, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, said inherited infrastructure limited immediate solutions but promised efforts to balance rural and urban supply. Rahman asked lawmakers to explain how the United States-Iran war had disrupted fuel supplies.

Salahuddin Ahmed, home minister, urged lawmakers to cooperate with police while warning that “mob culture” involving BNP members could fuel anti-government sentiment.

On fertilizer, lawmakers sought faster dealer appointments and timely delivery. Rahman urged stronger grassroots contact ahead of local elections and asked lawmakers to explain government positions on electricity, energy, fertilizer, and gas.
