Bangladesh capital steps up monitoring of hawkers, shops using public spaces illegally

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) administrator Md Abdus Salam said Thursday that hawkers and shops will not be allowed to illegally occupy roads or footpaths, as authorities intensify efforts to clear public spaces in Bangladesh’s capital.

Speaking during an eviction drive outside the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) office in Segunbagicha, Salam said future enforcement would include regular monitoring and surprise drives across Dhaka. He said Thursday’s operation was intended mainly to raise awareness, rather than impose fines.

Salam said hawkers would not be allowed on roads under any circumstances, while use of footpaths would require city corporation permission. He added that designated locations for hawkers were being planned from a prepared list.

Authorities will also inspect trade licenses, waste removal, and possible electricity misuse. Salam said shopkeepers had received warnings and public notices for six months, and cases could be filed against illegal shop owners when necessary.
