Glacier collapse kills at least 273 along Nepal-Tibet border. More than 1,300 remain missing.

Rescue teams searched Thursday for more than 1,300 people missing after a glacier collapse unleashed destructive floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, killing at least 273 people.

Authorities said 270 people were killed and 826 were missing in Nepal, while three were killed and 558 were missing in Tibet. Nepalese officials said dozens of bridges were destroyed and nearly 40 kilometers of roads were damaged, complicating rescue efforts.

Nepalese army rescued more than 100 people by helicopter and evacuated people trapped near the Trishuli hydropower project.

Nepal’s Tourism Board said 517 of those missing in the country were foreigners, including 178 Indians and more than 60 people from the United States.

United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the seismic event initially reported as an earthquake was a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse that sent debris downstream.
