Bangladesh wants to build national economic hub around Mongla Port. Officials say project would create new jobs.

Bangladesh plans to develop a national economic hub around Mongla Port, with officials saying the project could expand economic activity and create jobs in the region.

Road transport and bridges, railways, and shipping minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced the plan Monday at a stakeholders’ conference in Khulna organized by Mongla Port Authority.

“The problems of Mongla Port have been identified and those will be resolved within the next one month with cooperation from all concerned,” Alam said.

He said Mongla Port has immense potential and called for a more service-friendly environment in government offices to help increase revenue collection.

Port users, government agencies, industrial establishments, importers, exporters, and media representatives attended the conference and offered recommendations. Mongla Port Authority chairman rear admiral Arif Ahmed Mostofa delivered the welcome address, while harbour master captain Mohammad Shafiqul Islam presented a paper.
