Bangladesh pledges renewed push to revitalize South Asian regional cooperation

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), with officials calling for renewed political engagement and wider participation to strengthen regional cooperation.

State minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam outlined the government’s position during an Aug. 17 farewell meeting with outgoing SAARC secretary general Md Golam Sarwar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Islam emphasized sustained political engagement, cultural initiatives, and broader stakeholder involvement as Bangladesh seeks a more proactive role in reinvigorating the regional organization.

Sarwar briefed Islam on SAARC’s current state and said initiatives were needed to overcome challenges facing the organization. He also highlighted continuing regular activities and development-partner-supported programs.

A SAARC development report is expected by the end of 2026.

Islam thanked Sarwar for his stewardship and pledged Bangladesh’s continued support during the transition to his successor.
