Bangladesh prime minister likely to visit India between Aug. 20 and 25, says report

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to visit India between Aug. 20 and 25 as Dhaka and New Delhi work to finalize dates for his first trip there since taking office in February, diplomatic sources told the Daily Star.

Possible schedules include Aug. 20-21 and Aug. 21-22, according to the report. The two governments moved toward arranging a bilateral visit after Tarique decided not to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Sept. 12-13.

The visit could provide an opportunity to improve relations strained since the August 2024 ouster of the Awami League government and tensions over deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s activities in India.

Major issues between the countries include trade, energy, security, connectivity and water sharing. The Ganges Water Treaty expires in December, while a long-pending Teesta water-sharing agreement remains unresolved.
