Bangladesh egg prices rise as high vegetable costs squeeze Dhaka shoppers

Egg prices in Bangladesh’s capital have climbed to Tk150 a dozen (about $1.22), up from Tk130-140 (about $1.06-$1.14) two weeks ago, adding pressure on household budgets already strained by high vegetable prices, according to original reporting in the Business Standard.

Market visits in Dhaka on Aug. 14 found most vegetables selling for Tk60-120 per kilogram (about $0.49-$0.98), while out-of-season beans reached Tk200 (about $1.63). Green chilies fell sharply to Tk140-150 per kilogram (about $1.14-$1.22), down from Tk360-380 (about $2.93-$3.10) last week.

Egg seller Tarek said wholesale prices had risen as floods and power shortages killed chickens. Vegetable seller Mohin said retailers were passing on higher wholesale costs.

Chicken and meat prices were relatively stable, while fish remained expensive. Shoppers said rising food costs were forcing them to cut purchases.
