Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to become president of Bangladesh

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders have finalized secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as their first choice for president, according to multiple party sources.

Fakhrul’s name had been finalized in the party forum and that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s two-thirds majority in parliament meant “only the formalities remain.”

Fakhrul had indicated before the 13th national parliamentary election that it would be his last election, suggesting an approaching transition in his political career.

Fakhrul has served as the party’s secretary general for 15 years and was jailed 11 times during Sheikh Hasina’s rule.

Fakhrul began his professional career as a teacher. During roughly four decades in politics, he has served four terms as a member of parliament and held ministerial responsibilities multiple times.
