A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force along the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar district early Sunday, according to local residents.
The victim was identified as Tara Mia, son of Abdul Malek of the Murai Chhara Basti area of Kulaura upazila.
Residents said a group of four to five alleged smugglers illegally crossed into Indian territory through the Alinagar border in Prithimpasha union with the assistance of Indian smugglers. The group went about 500 yards beyond border pillar No. 1845/63-S in the Maguruli area to bring back contraband goods, residents said.
Members of the Border Security Force opened fire during a confrontation, killing Mia at the scene, according to residents.
Lt. Col. Sarkar Asif Mahmud, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh 46 Battalion in Sreemangal, said authorities were taking steps to gather further information about the incident.
