Bangladesh voters backed July Charter, Nahid says. He accuses Rahman regime of ignoring their verdict.

National Citizen Party convener and member of parliament Nahid Islam accused Bangladesh’s government Sunday of rejecting the referendum mandate for the July Charter by failing to implement promised constitutional reforms.

Nahid said nearly 70% of voters backed the charter and expected a Constitutional Reform Council to be formed and a new president elected under a reformed constitution.

“But we have seen that this government has denied the popular verdict of the referendum. They have taken no initiative to implement the July Charter. The reform council was not sworn in, nor was a session called,” he said.

Nahid also accused the government of politicizing state institutions, including the Election Commission, and criticized its decision to retain President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance separately nominated Liberal Democratic Party chairman Oli Ahmad as its common presidential candidate.
