Suspected crude bomb explosion critically injures three in Bangladesh

Three members of a family were critically injured Monday in a suspected crude bomb explosion outside a house in southern Bangladesh, police said.

The explosion occurred around 6 a.m. at Shah Alam Howlader’s home in Dudhlamou village in Barishal’s Bakerganj area. His wife, Hanufa Begum, daughter Eti and grandson Fahim were taken to a local health complex before being transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Shah Alam’s son, Jamal, said the explosion came from a crude bomb inside a sack of sand beside the house.

“My mother, sister and nephew caught fire after the explosion. They jumped into the nearby Tulatala River to extinguish the flames. We have no idea how the bomb got there,” he said.

Police secured the area and collected evidence. Officer-in-charge Adil Hossain said investigators had not determined the explosive type or identified those responsible.
