She’s alive! Myanmar releases rare photos of Aung San Suu Kyi amid health concerns.

Myanmar’s military-backed government has released rare photographs of imprisoned former leader Aung San Suu Kyi as concerns grow about her health.

The images showed the 81-year-old Nobel Peace laureate meeting Arnaud de Baecque, the International Committee of the Red Cross representative in Myanmar. The meeting was believed to be her first with a foreign envoy since the military detained her during the 2021 coup.

Other photographs showed Aung San Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake in June. She appeared smiling, with no visible signs of illness, though neither the government nor the Red Cross disclosed details about her health or detention conditions.

Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to 27 years in prison on corruption and other charges. The government said in May that she would be moved to house arrest.

Her son, Kim Aris, welcomed the photographs but said they did not provide sufficient reassurance.

“Hope is not proof,” Aris said, calling for transparency, humanitarian access and his mother’s release.
