Bangladesh ranks near bottom globally for mobile and broadband speeds

Bangladesh ranks 91st among 103 countries for mobile internet speed and 93rd among 141 for fixed broadband, according to a World Bank report citing the February 2026 Speedtest Global Index.

The country averages 43 megabits per second on mobile connections and 66 megabits per second on fixed broadband. Despite nationwide fourth-generation coverage, 47% of the population remains offline, the report said.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics data show 58.6% of people use the internet, while mobile phone ownership is nearly 89.5%. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission recorded 189.83 million mobile subscribers and 135.94 million internet users through June 2026.

The report said high handset prices, costly data packages and low digital literacy continue to restrict adoption. It warned that slow, unreliable connections could hinder investment, exports, digital payments, education, healthcare and public services, particularly in rural areas.
