Bangladesh heightens security for anniversary of July Uprising

Bangladesh has placed law enforcement and security agencies on high alert ahead of the second anniversary of the July Uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule on Aug. 5, 2024.

“All necessary measures have been taken to ensure a peaceful and secure environment across the country ahead of 5 August,” home minister Salahuddin Ahmed told journalists Monday.

Ahmed said Home Ministry directed police and other agencies to strengthen vigilance and remain prepared to respond to possible incidents. Police vehicles were ordered not to be left unattended, and security personnel were told to maintain continuous monitoring.

A high-level coordination meeting will review the security situation and finalize arrangements.

Ahmed also cited bomb-like objects recently recovered in Motijheel and Ashulia. Investigators are trying to identify those responsible and determine whether the incidents are connected.
