Bangladesh police put on alert over Awami League activities in August

Police across Bangladesh have been placed on alert over reported activities by the banned Awami League in August, home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Sunday.

Ahmed spoke at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, during a passing-out parade for probationary assistant superintendents from the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service police cadre.

“Activities of the banned Awami League are being seen in the month of August. For this reason, police across the country have been alerted,” he said.

Ahmed said separate investigations were underway after bombs were recovered in Dhaka’s Motijheel and Ashulia areas. He said such recoveries had declined over the past six months and did not suggest a dangerous trend.

“Even so, we are on alert. The bomb disposal unit has been kept ready round the clock,” he said.

The parade included 57 officers, while 56 probationary officers have begun practical training in districts.
