Bangladesh, Myanmar discuss reopening suspended border trade

Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed Sunday to expand bilateral trade, improve connectivity and pursue conditions for the voluntary return of Rohingya refugees, officials said.

Commerce minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir met Myanmar ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe at the Commerce Ministry, where they discussed maritime links, liquefied natural gas imports, investment and the possible reopening of suspended border trade.

“Given the geographical proximity and existing potential, trade between the two countries can be increased further,” Muqtadir said.

The ambassador said border trade could initially resume on a limited or temporary basis. Both sides also discussed agricultural goods, fisheries products, rice, pharmaceuticals and frozen foods.

Bangladesh called for a safe, sustainable and dignified environment for Rohingya repatriation. Myanmar said verification of lists submitted by Bangladesh was continuing and further steps would depend on security conditions.
