Tourist dies after parasailing rope snaps in Bangladesh

A tourist died Saturday after a parasailing rope snapped and sent him into the sea at Cox’s Bazar beach, police and local officials said.

Shouvik Roy was parasailing around noon at a commercial facility in Darianagar along Marine Drive when the equipment’s rope broke, said Mahbub Alam, a beach worker with the Cox’s Bazar district administration.

“He was rescued and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” Alam told The Business Standard.

Roy had traveled from Khulna with a nine-member group. His body was taken to the morgue at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital.

Police inspected the scene and opened an inquiry, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Mohammad Ali said.

Local sources said at least 10 tourists were injured in incidents involving the same operator over the past two years. Authorities temporarily suspended parasailing in early 2024 after several accidents.
