Bangladesh seeks expanded US investment in agriculture and technology

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the United States on Saturday to expand investment in Bangladesh, particularly in warehousing, agriculture and information technology.

Rahman made the appeal during talks in Dhaka with Sergio Gor, the United States special envoy for South and Central Asia. The two sides discussed trade, regional cooperation and possible investment through the United States International Development Finance Corporation.

“Today, I had the opportunity to discuss with the Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman the great opportunities between the U.S. and Bangladesh to enhance economic cooperation and strengthen our partnership,” Gor said.

Gor said the partnership was a priority for Washington and expressed support for a proposed United States investor summit in Bangladesh. He also pledged to help resume United States Food and Drug Administration inspections and discussed potential Bangladeshi participation in the PAX Silica initiative.

Talks also covered international support and a political solution for the Rohingya crisis.
