Bangladesh to add two intercity trains on Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route

Bangladesh will launch two new intercity trains between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar later this month as authorities seek to meet growing passenger demand and reduce ticket shortages, state minister for railways Habibur Rashid said Saturday.

Rashid announced the planned service during a visit to Cox’s Bazar railway station. He said passenger and tourist numbers on the route have steadily increased, prompting the government to expand rail services and improve facilities.

The additional trains are expected to ease ticket pressure and provide more comfortable, convenient and timely journeys, Rashid said.

The government also plans to develop the station into an international-standard, tourism-friendly rail hub. Its full operation and management will be handed to a private organization.

Rashid inspected passenger services, infrastructure, cleanliness, security and operations. He instructed railway officials to accelerate the station’s full opening and provide international-standard services.
