Rice prices surge in Bangladesh district amid export growth

Aromatic rice prices have climbed sharply in Naogaon, thinning customer traffic and prompting allegations that millers are creating an artificial shortage.

Chinigura Atop rice reached 200 taka (approximately $1.62) per kilogram after rising by 40 to 80 taka (approximately 32 to 65 cents) in recent weeks. Katari rice, which represents 80% of local retail sales, rose 4 taka (approximately 3 cents) to 80 taka (approximately 65 cents) per kilogram.

“In 45 years, I haven’t seen such a price increase in my life,” an unidentified buyer said.

Mill owners blamed exports and higher paddy costs. Katari paddy sells for 1,800 taka (approximately $14.54) per maund, while Atop paddy costs 3,700 taka (approximately $29.88).

Officials said a government food distribution program will begin this week and promised action against illegal stockpiles.
