Bangladesh wall collapse death toll rises to three

The death toll from a boundary wall collapse at Mirpur University College rose to three after an injured woman died Tuesday night, police said.

Beauty Begum, 50, died around 9:30 p.m. while receiving treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, said Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station.

Nasima Begum, 44, and rickshaw puller Md Firoz, 41, died earlier. At least five injured people remain under treatment.

The wall collapsed on people waiting to buy subsidized essentials from a Trading Corporation of Bangladesh truck.

Beauty’s sister-in-law, Umme Kulsum, said Beauty had gone to buy flour from the truck sale for the first time. “Just when the family’s situation was gradually improving, this tragedy struck,” she said.

College authorities formed a seven-member committee to investigate and submit a report within seven working days. An employee said the wall had no pillars or beams.
