A 5-year-old boy drowned after falling into tidal water in a canal in Ward No. 5 of Nijhum Dwip Union in Noakhali District, residents said.
The child, identified as Mahir, secretly followed his mother as she went to collect water from a tube well. He slipped into the canal and disappeared beneath the tidal water, according to a neighbor.
Residents began searching around 1 p.m. and recovered his body from the canal around 3 p.m.
“A five-year-old boy named Mahir followed his mother when she went to get tube well water. He fell into the canal and drowned,” the neighbor said.
A police doctor said he went to the scene and declared Mahir dead.
Residents accused the local administration of failing to support the family or respond despite a second similar incident.
