Authorities have arrested retired army major Md Mozaffar Hossain, 77, over allegations tied to the 1981 assassination of former president Ziaur Rahman, police said.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police said its Detective Branch detained Mozaffar at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday at a Banani residence after source information and technology analysis. He was transferred Thursday to military police at Dhaka Cantonment after his identity was confirmed.
Historical accounts place Mozaffar near Zia when he was killed at Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981, and describe him as remaining with rebel officers afterward. He later escaped during fighting as the uprising collapsed.
Authorities have not disclosed formal charges, whether an old military warrant remains active or what judicial process will follow. Mozaffar has not made a public statement.
