Sheikh Hasina says she will return to Bangladesh. Government says she must face court.

Bangladesh has formally asked India to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia, an information adviser said on Tuesday.

Zahed Ur Rahman, an adviser to the prime minister, said the government intends to bring Hasina back for proceedings before the International Crimes Tribunal. He said foreign lawyers and observers could participate and the trial could be recorded.

Hasina has lived in India since her government was toppled during student-led protests on Aug. 5, 2024. The tribunal sentenced her to death on Nov. 17, 2025, after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity tied to a deadly crackdown.

Hasina has rejected the verdict as politically motivated and said she plans to return to Bangladesh this year.
