Nearly 12 percent of spice samples tested by Indian authorities failed to meet quality and safety standards, according to data obtained by Reuters.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India tested 4,054 samples between May and early July after Hong Kong suspended sales of some MDH and Everest spice blends over pesticide concerns. Of those samples, 474 failed to meet required parameters.
Britain tightened controls on Indian spice imports, while New Zealand, United States and Australia began examining concerns involving the brands. MDH and Everest said their products were safe.
“Action on non-conforming samples has been taken as stipulated,” Indian agency said, without providing details.
India exported a record $4.46 billion in spices and spice products during the fiscal year ending in March.
