Torrential overnight rain and showers on July 12 flooded markets across Dhaka, forcing closures and damaging merchandise.
New Market, Gausia Market, Chandrima Super Market, Noorjahan Market, Elephant Road and Karwan Bazar were among affected centers. Water reached knee to waist level near New Market, where all shops remained closed and electricity was temporarily disconnected for safety.
Firoz Ul Islam, office secretary of New Market Traders’ Association, said officials would decide Monday whether to reopen.
At Karwan Bazar, wholesale vegetable trader Mohammad Sohel said sales that normally reach 50,000 to 60,000 Bangladeshi taka by 10 a.m. had not reached 15,000 taka by midday.
“Every year, we witness the same situation. We cannot open our shops and have to bear losses. We only want a lasting drainage solution,” trader Sajib Mia said.
