Preparations are underway to bury former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia beside the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in Sher-E-Bangla Nagar.
Workers began excavating the grave Tuesday at the designated site next to the mausoleum of Rahman. Police maintained a heavy presence throughout the park as preparations continued.
Home Adviser Lieutenant General Retired Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury visited the area Tuesday afternoon to inspect the excavation and other arrangements.
Khaleda Zia died at 6 a.m. Tuesday while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, according to party officials.
Zia Udyan, also known historically as Chandrima Udyan, translated Moonlight Park, is a 73 acre park located across from the National Parliament Building in Dhaka. The site contains the grave of Ziaur Rahman and was renamed Zia Udyan after the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.
