Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a three-time former prime minister, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, while being treated at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
She was 80.
Official posts on verified Facebook pages for Zia and Bangladesh Nationalist Party said she died around 6 a.m. and confirmed it about an hour later.
Zia had been treated at home in Gulshan since her release from prison, with liver, kidney and heart complications. She was admitted to Evercare on Nov. 23 for tests, her personal physician said at the time, and doctors later said she developed a lung infection.
Zia led party through decades of political turbulence and is remembered as Bangladesh’s first woman elected prime minister.
