Bangladesh has approved construction of a 220 megawatt solar power plant in Sonagazi after the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council cleared the proposal on December 1.
The project carries an estimated cost of about $154.6 million, including roughly 12.1 million dollars from the government, $132.9 million in foreign assistance, and $9.6 million from the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd.
According to the planning ministry, the plant will be built on 634 acres and will supply power to the national grid through the Mirsarai substation. The project includes more than 469,000 solar modules, new transformers, a 240 MVA substation, and internal infrastructure.
A senior Planning Commission official said solar-based power will curb emissions and reduce Bangladesh’s dependence on volatile global fuel markets.
