Prime minister of India Narendra Modi on Monday expressed concern over the health of former Bangladesh prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, saying he was “deeply concerned” after learning she had been placed on ventilation.
“Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years. Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. India stands ready to extend all possible support, in whatever way we can,” Modi said on Monday.
Zia, 80, remains in critical condition after being admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka on November 23 with a severe chest infection that affected her heart and lungs.
Party leaders said her condition deteriorated four days later, prompting her move to the coronary care unit. Bangladesh Nationalist Party officials said local and foreign specialists are involved in her treatment.
Zia’s condition has since stabilized. Her family was contemplating and making preparation to take her to London for treatment.
