A special court in Bangladesh on Monday sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and her niece, British member of Parliament Tulip Siddiq, to prison for irregularities in the Purbachal New Town project.
Judge Md Rabiul Alam of the Special Judge’s Court 4 in Dhaka delivered the verdict in a packed courtroom under tight security.
Hasina received five years in prison, Rehana seven and Tulip two.
Fourteen other accused were given five years, and all 17 were fined Tk 1 lakh each.
Case records show the Anti-Corruption Commission filed six cases in January alleging Hasina unlawfully secured six plots in collusion with senior Rajuk officials.
Prosecutors said Tulip used her influence to obtain plots for Rehana’s family.
