Bangladesh’s National Independent Investigation Commission on Sunday alleged political and external involvement in the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles mutiny killings as it submitted its report to chief adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
Major General (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman and other commission members said the then-ruling Awami League had direct links to the events and identified Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, then a lawmaker, as the “chief coordinator.”
Major General (retd) Mohammad Jahangir Kabir Talukder said the killings occurred with the “green signal” of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina and that party members entered Pilkhana with 20 to 25 people but left with more than 200. He cited failures across security agencies.
The chief adviser said the findings would illuminate a tragedy long left in darkness.
“When you were assigned to do this it seemed a little irregularity, but the full image you brought up is horrible,” said Yunus. “This is absolutely beyond imagination.”
