The death toll from Friday’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake in Bangladesh has risen to 10, officials said, as reports of injuries and structural damage continued to emerge across Dhaka, Narsingdi and Narayanganj.
The quake struck at 10:38 a.m. with its epicentre in Madhabdi of Narsingdi, shaking buildings, cracking walls and sending residents running into the streets.
Four people died in Dhaka, including three crushed when a rooftop railing collapsed in Old Dhaka. Five others were killed in Narsingdi in incidents involving falling debris, collapsing homes and panic-related falls. A 10-month-old girl died in Narayanganj after a wall collapsed.
Several hundred people were injured, and more than a dozen buildings were damaged as power plants briefly went offline.
