Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal-1 will announce its verdict Monday in a landmark crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two former top officials over their alleged command responsibility during the July Mass Uprising.
The judgment, the first related to the state’s crackdown to reach completion, will be broadcast live on state-run BTV and shared with private channels.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said, “We prayed for the maximum punishment,” a penalty that could include the death sentence under the tribunal’s statute.
Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun pled guilty and turned state witness , while Hasina and ex–home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were tried in absentia.
