Bangladesh’s streets remain gripped by vigilante justice and fear, with 153 people killed in mob violence over the past three months, according to Odhikar.
The Manabadhikar Sanskriti Foundation said 44 mob-beating incidents occurred in October alone, leaving 12 dead and 50 injured. It also reported 66 unidentified bodies recovered nationwide that month, up from 52 in September.
Rights groups warn that public frustration with law enforcement and political paralysis is fueling mob action. The persistence of such violence, they say, reflects a breakdown in public trust and the state’s failure to maintain order.
Odhikar described the surge in mob killings and unidentified corpses as a “frightening symptom of lawlessness,” calling for stronger community policing and swift investigations to restore citizens’ sense of security.
