More than three quarters of Bangladeshi women have faced violence from their husbands or intimate partners, according to a 2024 survey by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the United Nations Population Fund.
The nationwide study found that 76 percent of women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence, while 49 percent suffered abuse within the past year. Physical violence affected nearly half of all respondents, followed by controlling behavior, emotional abuse, and sexual assault.
The survey of 27,476 women marks the third national study on gender-based violence since 2011. It also revealed that violence often recurs, with nearly one in three victims saying assaults happened at least six times.
Researchers warned that the figures highlight a pervasive culture of silence, with two in three women never disclosing their experiences. Officials urged stronger prevention, legal protection, and awareness programs to combat widespread domestic violence.
