The Congress party on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of compromising India’s interests after U.S. President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s army chief and prime minister during the Gaza peace summit in Egypt.
Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh asked “what sort of friendship” Modi shared with Trump, noting that the U.S. leader had earlier hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir for a White House lunch despite his “inflammatory remarks” preceding the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks.
At Monday’s summit, Trump called Munir “my favourite Field Marshal” and invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to join him on stage, where Sharif called Trump “a man of peace” and said Pakistan had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump later referred to Modi as “a very good friend of mine.” India has denied Trump’s claim that Washington mediated the May ceasefire with Pakistan.
