Attacks like the one on the Jatiya Party office in Bangladesh must not be tolerated

The repeated attacks on the Jatiya Party office in Bijoynagar highlight a growing failure in law enforcement. On Friday evening, protesters once again vandalized and set fire to a major political office in the heart of the Bangladesh capital.

This followed a public demonstration that should have prompted a strong and visible police presence. Instead, miscreants had time to strike, cause damage, and flee.

This kind of violence cannot be accepted in a democratic society.

Everyone has the right to protest peacefully, but no one has the right to destroy property or endanger lives. Police and security forces must do more to prevent these incidents.

Political disagreements must never be allowed to turn into open violence.
