Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has reaffirmed his commitment to holding Bangladesh’s 13th national parliamentary elections in the first half of February next year.
“There is no alternative to the election. If anyone thinks of any other alternative, that would be disastrous for the nation,” Yunus said after meeting with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party at his residence.
BNP leaders made clear that the election must be held on time, with no scope for delay.
Jamaat and NCP, however, pressed for full implementation of the July Charter before the polls, and both demanded a ban on the Jatiya Party, citing its role in legitimizing disputed past elections. Yunus assured the parties of reforms, justice, and a free and fair vote.
