Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed announced that nearly 80 percent of Bangladesh’s judicial reform programme has already been implemented, marking significant progress toward strengthening the judiciary.
Speaking at a Supreme Court Bar Association discussion, he outlined key steps already achieved: ensuring transparency in judicial functions, enforcing discipline among judicial officers, extending reforms to courts nationwide, and activating the Supreme Judicial Appointment Council. The latter, described as a historic milestone, introduced a collegium-based system to guarantee fairness and transparency in judicial recruitment.
The Chief Justice stressed that the judiciary is working tirelessly to restore its independence and integrity. He added that the remaining reforms focus on structural changes, particularly the creation of an independent Supreme Court secretariat to strengthen the constitutional separation of powers and secure full institutional autonomy.
“The judiciary must serve the people with fairness, courage and integrity,” he declared.
