Japan and Bangladesh agreed to expand economic and security cooperation Tuesday, with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announcing plans for approximately 1 trillion yen (about $6.34 billion) in private investment over five years.
The leaders agreed to advance the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt initiative under a new framework emphasizing connectivity, economic growth, disaster preparedness, and regional stability.
“Japan will strongly support nation-building efforts under the Rahman administration, which was established following democratic general elections,” Takaichi said.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed the partnership and urged Japanese businesses to invest in Bangladesh.
“Our ambition is clear: to turn this friendship between our two nations into a powerful engine of economic opportunity and shared prosperity,” Rahman said.
Japan also announced plans to provide patrol vessels to strengthen Bangladesh’s maritime security capabilities.
