Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) had 117,666 pending National Identity Card (NID) correction applications as of Oct. 18, The Daily Star reported, citing a commission report.
Nearly 92% were submitted this year. The largest group, 69,252 applications, involved complex corrections requiring approval from the director general of the commission’s NID wing. These requests can involve dates of birth, ages, and parents’ names.
Dhaka had the most pending applications in that category, with 10,615, followed by Chattogram with 10,559 and Mymensingh with 8,332.
EC senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed said fundamental changes to personal information and inconsistencies in supporting documents complicated verification. One applicant described repeated visits and a wait exceeding a month to correct his parents’ permanent addresses. The figures describe the backlog on Oct. 18, rather than a current count of unresolved applications.
