Burglars killed Bangladesh Awami League leader after she recognized one of them, police say

Police in Bangladesh arrested three men Sunday over the killing of Awami League leader Dalia Akter Suma, 50, at her Keraniganj apartment.

Police identified the suspects as Anik, 19, Ashik, 23, and Alamgir, 36 (all three pictured).

Investigators said the suspects entered Suma’s apartment Friday intending to steal valuables but killed her after she recognized Anik.

“Anik put on a burqa and, while escaping through the front door, encountered the domestic worker of that house,” a police officer said.

Locals briefly detained him but released him after mistaking him for a robbery victim, police said.

Suma’s daughters, Liza and Nadia, disputed the burglary account, alleging a planned killing linked to a property dispute.

They said valuables worth Tk 50-60 lakh (approximately $40,400-$48,500) remained untouched and demanded an investigation into the suspects’ phone records.

Police sought 10-day remands for further questioning.
