A fire killed at least 10 people at Tuptup Resort in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on Oct. 17, months after authorities warned the establishment about fire risks.
The Business Standard reported that the wooden resort lacked a fire safety license, extinguishers, alarms, and a fire safety plan. Fire officials said an inspection in June had identified safety problems, but the resort continued operating.
The Daily Star independently reported that inspectors served a formal notice June 11 identifying the structure as hazardous. Officials said the building was destroyed in the blaze.
Police detained manager Mohammad Suman for questioning, according to The Business Standard. Authorities formed a five-member committee to investigate. The cause remained unconfirmed, and an initial suspicion involving a kitchen stove had not been established as fact.
