Students at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) in Bangladesh locked newly appointed vice-chancellor Sheikh Shariful Alam inside its administrative building Monday, demanding his resignation, The Daily Star reported.
Protesters also cut the building’s power and water supplies as a campus shutdown entered its 21st day. They want former vice-chancellor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem reinstated.
Teachers, officers, and staff associations announced a complete work stoppage and noncooperation, halting academic and administrative operations.
Alam entered his office after padlocks were broken, according to university sources. He defended his appointment, saying the government followed proper procedures.
Chattogram district superintendent of police Masud Alam said he spoke with the vice-chancellor that afternoon and that Alam did not want to leave his office.
The administrative gates remained locked after nightfall.
